ACSI Math Olympics

This year in January, DuBois Christian Schools  held a school wide Math Olympic tournament for grades 3-8.  Each classroom competed separately on their own grade level.  The top students from each class in the computation and reasoning categories then traveled to compete at the next level in Erie, PA at the District competition March 20th, 2009.  This event was held at the First Christian Academy.

What is Math Olympics?

The ACSI Math Olympics is available to ACSI member schools only. Students in grades 3–8 are eligible to participate in this event. The ACSI Math Olympics is a series of timed tests or rounds. Each student will compete against other students in his or her grade. The areas of competition include Arithmetic Computation and Mathematical Reasoning as explained below:

  • Arithmetic Computation: Problems will be of the paper/pencil computational variety (example: fundamental operations).
  • Mathematical Reasoning: These paper/pencil problems will be more difficult than the daily mathematical assignments of the student’s grade level. They involve more than one operation and/or concept and could require a high level of reasoning (example: story problems, patterns, puzzles).

Objectives of the ACSI Math Olympics are as follows:

  • to stimulate an interest in mathematics
  • to recognize the achievements of students in mathematics
  • to provide an opportunity to meet and fellowship with other mathematics-oriented students
  • to offer students an opportunity to glorify God in the use of their mathematical abilities beyond the classroom

Math Olympics

This year our school traveled to Erie, PA to participate in the ACSI Math Olympics on March the 20th, 2009. Twenty of our students earned the opportunity to go. Half of them placed in the top five competitive positions and received ribbons.
