DCS Kindergarten Program

On this page, you can find the answers to your questions about the Kindergarten program at DCS. From the curriculum offered, to a typical day's schedule, as well as our kindergarten readiness screening, and registration information--you'll find the information you need right here!

 

 

Curriculum

DuBois Christian Schools is currently using the A Beka and Bob Jones curriculum. The program provides instruction for:

bullet Phonics, progressing from letter recognition, sounds, and special sounds to blends and word reading, sentence reading and, finally, reading beginner books.
 
bullet Number recognition 1-100 and number value; counting by ones, fives and tens to 100; simple addition and subtraction; telling time - “o’clock”; as well as other skills.
 
bullet Science & Social Studies units are interwoven throughout the year.
 
bullet Art activities are designed to encourage creativity and increase fine motor control.
 
bullet Physical Education & Music classes, including a beginner bell choir, are offered weekly.
 
bullet Kindergarten parents are encouraged to take part in class parties, field trips, special projects and units.


A Typical Day at DCS Kindergarten
Monday - Friday

bullet Short free time as children arrive by 8:15 a.m.
 
bullet An opening, including pledges, calendar and prayer.
 
bullet Bible lessons, also involving Scripture and catechism memorization.
 
bullet Snack, provided by parents.
 
bullet Morning instructional time, including games, movement, music, and morning seat work. Reading circle is added in the second half of the year.
 
bullet Lunch in the cafeteria with other elementary children.
 
bullet Afternoon recess on the play ground, in the gym, or in the classroom.
 
bullet Story/rest time (longer at the beginning of the year and gradually decreasing toward the end of the year).
 
bullet Short instructional period (review) or directed free time.
 
bullet Dismissal at 3:00 p.m.

 

Kindergarten Screening

To determine the readiness of a child to enter kindergarten, DCS administers developmental screening each spring. The screening generally takes 30 to 40 minutes and involves observation by the teacher of the following areas:

bullet Attention span
bullet Visual, fine & gross motor skills
bullet Spatial awareness
bullet Language
bullet Reasoning
bullet Concepts
 

Registration

You can schedule your child’s kindergarten readiness screening by contacting the school office at 814-371-7395. Please keep in mind that, in order to register for DCS kindergarten:

bullet Children must be five years of age before September 1st.
 
bullet Children must have the minimum doses of immunizations required by state law before the beginning of the school year.
 
bullet DCS requires and administers developmental screening for all potential kindergarten students. To schedule screening, contact the school office.
 
bullet Obtain enrollment application, parental forms and student health forms by contacting the school office.
 

A family interview is required before the start of the school year and can be arranged by contacting the school office.

When you bring your child to your registration appointment, please bring with you:

bullet Child’s Birth Certificate
bullet Child’s Immunization Records & Health History
bullet Child’s Social Security Card
bullet Completed Registration Form
